Chartered Accounting Education Program
The purpose of this publication is to provide an overview of the registration, training, academic, and
other requirements for those seeking to qualify for membership in The Institute of Chartered Accountants of
Newfoundland. As a prelude to this information, it is useful to review briefly the role of the Chartered
Accountant in today's society and the business community and to describe the Institute, the Atlantic School
of Chartered Accountancy, and the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Overview
The Professional Practice of Chartered Accountancy
Currently, approximately 72,000 Canadian Chartered Accountants (CAs) are members of one (or more) of the
provincial institutes of Chartered Accountants, as well as of the Canadian Institute of Chartered
Accountants. Chartered Accountants earn their professional qualification and designation through study,
training, and experience while employed with a firm of Chartered Accountants engaged in public practice.
During this time, the student follows a prescribed course of study and must pass examinations in a variety of
subjects leading up to the Uniform Evaluation. This examination is a rigorous three day uniform national
examination which must be passed prior to being admitted as a member of a provincial institute. Approximately
2,000 new Chartered Accountants are added to the membership rolls each year by virtue of having met these
requirements.
Chartered Accountants are a diverse group employed in all major sectors of the Canadian economy. Those is
public practice not only report on the financial statements of individuals and corporations, but also advise
clients on a variety of financial matters, including management and accounting information systems, business
and personal financial planning, mergers and acquisitions, insolvency, business valuations, and, of course,
taxation.
More than half of the Chartered Accountants in Canada are employed in various financial and management
positions in industry and government. They also play a major role in the university schools of business and
in accounting education and research. To these positions in industry, government, and education, CAs bring
the same professional attitude and integrity that characterize them in public practice. The CA is a member of
a profession with standards of competence, integrity, and service recognized throughout the world.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Newfoundland
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Newfoundland (CA Newfoundland) was incorporated on March 31,
1949. CA Newfoundland is governed by a Board of eight elected
members and two public representatives. Board members serve two-year terms with a maximum limit of three
consecutive terms. Terms are staggered such that approximately one-half of the Board are elected each year to
provide greater continuity in any one year, while maintaining an annual election. The Board meets
approximately six times a year to represent the interests of the members of the Institute and to represent
the public interest in determining and demanding appropriate organizational performance. The administrative
office of the Institute is under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer.
The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA)
The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants is an association of all Canadian Chartered Accountants
and everyone who holds membership in a provincial institute is automatically a member of the CICA. Each
member has a voice in the affairs of the CICA at its annual and special meetings and through its officers and
appointed and elected representatives. The affairs of the CICA are directed by a Board of Directors appointed
on a regional basis.
